I’m pretty sure it was nine degrees when I took these photos. Clearly my outfit (and footwear) were a bit impractical, in terms of warmth – but I find that the cold temperatures don’t always dictate my sense of style or my sensibility. Plus, my excitement over these gold pumps (via Rue La La) couldn’t be tempered. Luckily I wasn’t outside for too long.

For a dressier look, I wore dark skinny jeans (love the fit of Goldsign denim) and a silky Amanda Uprichard blouse in a pretty oxblood/burgundy. A creamy white J.Crew coat and neutral bag topped off this not-so-suitable-for-winter outfit.

So I wore this faux fur coat to see American Hustle over the weekend, and I’m pretty sure other moviegoers thought I was in costume… to match the 1970’s fashion in the film. (You know – like how diehard fans would go see Star Wars dressed up as the characters? Ugh.) Anyways, great movie. And I love this coat because it looks a bit excessive, but is actually pretty practical (it’s the warmest thing I own). Plus, who doesn’t want to look like a furry linebacker?

An oversized faux fur coat (or real fur, if you happen to own one of those) works really when it’s styled with more casual pieces: jeans, t-shirts, simple sweaters – even a pair of cute sneakers. Fur is also great for fancy nights out, but the laid-back combo feels unexpected and fresh. I’m wearing mine here with black skinny jeans, a boxy white tee and pointed-toe pumps (white footwear always seems to have a pseudo-sporty and relaxed vibe, in my opinion – even when we’re talking heels).

DIY: mixing flowers and succulents

mixing succulents and flowers, floral arrangements with succulents, DIY succulent arrangement, succulent trend, how to make floral arrangement, peony flower arrangements, succulent bouquets, boston flower exchange, home decor ideas, decorating with fresh flowers, style at home, how to arrange flowers for home, bright flowers during winter, where to find peonies and succulents boston, floral inspiration, boston style blogger, boston fashion blogger, boston style blog, boston fashion blog, boston lifestyle blog, home design blog boston, home decor boston

I think everyone loves succulents. If you ever peruse Pinterest, you’ll likely encounter a few succulents nestled into an artfully-designed bridal bouquet or centerpiece (they’re almost as ubiquitous as mason jars in the Pinterest world). So they’ve been trendy for awhile, but I am not complaining. Personally, I’m a big fan of any plant that doesn’t die at the first sign of neglect.

Beyond that, I really like the texture and depth succulents add to floral arrangements. The soft, dusty green variety are my favorite – so beautiful paired with coral and pink flowers. The best part? The succulents used in your arrangement can be replanted in soil long after the flowers wilt (like, two weeks later) and still thrive. Resilient lil’ guys!

Here’s my process for creating bright, happy arrangements using succulents and flowers (…perhaps unfit for a Pinterest wedding, but they do look lovely in my apartment). PS: check out more floral inspiration here.

You’ll need:
  • 2-3 succulents of varying sizes (medium/large)
  • an assortment of fresh flowers (I used a mixture of anemone, peonies, lisianthus and spray roses)
  • floral foam brick (soaked in water)
  • vase or planter
  • thin wire and green floral tape
  • skewers or chopsticks
  • wire cutters
  • floral shears
