I don’t know about you guys, but I think one of the only bright spots during a gross, endless winter is when spring collections start to pop up in stores (a sign of hope!). On the other hand, it’s a little depressing to see dresses, skirts and wedges that I wouldn’t be able to wear right now unless I had a death wish. Anyways, last weekend I took a break from binge-watching House of Cards Season 2 and picked up a few things from Madewell and Bloomingdales. Because I’m impatient, I wanted to find pieces I could wear now — during this awkward transitional phase between winter and spring. So I got a stretchy striped skirt and a patterned top with a beaded collar (plus some cute graphic tees you’ll see soon). The best new thing in this outfit, however, are the sunglasses — which are from Warby Parker’s spring collection. If you’re anxious to start updating your wardrobe for the new season but still find yourself constrained by frigid temperatures, icy sidewalks and piles of nasty snow, sunglasses are a great place to start. There’s nothing stopping you from donning some new shades (I mean…you probably need them with all that glare from the snow, right?). I fell in love with the Reilly frames when I saw them online because they’re similar in size/shape to the Everetts that I wear ALL the time. And I was very ready for a new pair of sunglasses to SEE me through spring (mwahaha).

So even though this outfit would’ve been MUCH cuter without the tights and wool coat, it shows there’s some hope for spring (clothes, at least) — even in the dead of winter. If the weather cooperates this weekend, I’ll be styling more spring-minded outfits (with my new sunglasses, of course) for upcoming posts. Fingers crossed!

Honestly, I’m terrible at applying makeup — which is part of the reason I don’t mention the topic of beauty often on City Tonic. I wish I had skills in this area, but when I come across beauty tips and tricks online or in magazines, I tell myself: yeah, I’m gonna do that — but I rarely do. So I have been relying on the same “routine” for years.

Anyways, I’m always interested in seeing what products other people use daily and can’t live without. I love trying new makeup and get excited when I discover something that makes me feel just a bit prettier — so I thought I’d share some of my perennial favorites, and a few new discoveries.

Hair: Mine has been tortured for years. I think I was 14 or 15 when I started coloring my hair, and it hasn’t gotten a break since then (thus the reason for its breakage…). My stylist introduced me to Living Proof products, and I’m hooked (I use the shampoo/conditioner too). Perfect Hair Day is amazing and I use it before blowdrying to protect and prep my hair. I spritz my hair with a tiny bit of this Bumble and bumble finishing spray after it’s dry for extra shine.

Nails: I’m sure you’re no stranger to Essie nail polishes. I have tried every polish under the sun, but I keep coming back to Essie for the widest range of colors (and cutest polish names). Pictured here (clockwise from top left): Penny Talk, For the Twill of It, Turquoise and Caicos, Tart Deco and Fifth Avenue.

Eyes: I swore by Diorshow mascara for years until I tried LORAC pro. The tapered brush takes a little getting used to, but it’s great for those tiny corner lashes.

Face: Obsessed with Benefit’s Hoola bronzer and CORALista blush. The bronzer is matte and not at all orangey, while the blush is a perfect balance of shimmer and ultra-flattering color.

Lips:I love Smashbox’s matte red lipstick when I’m feeling adventurous, and Dior Addict lip polish for a soft pink anytime gloss.

Skin: Seriously, there’s no better investment you can make for your face than a Clarisonic Mia. I use mine every morning, and again before bed – it makes my face feel super clean and fresh, and has simply improved the look of my skin overall (I think).

Would love to hear your recommendations for any other beauty products! I’m always down to try new ones.

In honor of Valentine’s Day (tomorrow) – the holiday that everyone loves to hate/hates to love – I put together a pink and red outfit that’s bursting with V-Day spirit. Even though it’s pretty corny/nerdy to theme-dress for holidays, I have always loved the combination of red and pink and February 14th has become a great excuse to wear it. I took these photos on a surprisingly warm day, but of course going bare-legged tomorrow night would be terrible (it’s supposed to snow…again). Even so, a warmer variation of this outfit would still be perfect for date night, or a night out with your girlfriends. I think a bright fit-and-flare dress works for winter when you layer a simple sweater over it (love the J.Crew Tippi sweater – it comes in a million colors). Plus, it helps tone down the look if you’re just going out to dinner. I turned the hem of my sweater under and clipped it in the back to keep my waist defined. Paired with simple rose gold jewelry, a leopard clutch and some killer metallic pumps – it’s an outfit that hints at sexy without trying too hard. Right?

To be honest, I’ve been battling a miserable cold this week – so my hopes for a romantic Valentine’s Day aren’t super high (just hoping to enjoy a dinner out, without a box of tissues in hand). Regardless of how you decide to celebrate/not celebrate tomorrow night, I hope you get a chance to dress up and hang out (with friends, a boyfriend, a husband, parents – doesn’t matter, as long as there’s some alcohol and chocolate involved). Have a happy one.
